“Everyone is a…”

“Everyone is a…”

“Everyone is a Youtuber now”
“Everyone is a Blogger now”
“Everyone is a this…Everyone is a that”

These are phrases I have seen and heard a lot recently. I see it in a tweet/status or hear the comment made in passing. Like many, I am tired of hearing it. This post is definitely a rant. I did not even plan to do this post until yesterday. This is a topic that I needed to get off my chest. I am not only going to rant, but I am going to specifically address those who love to criticise people for putting time into their passions. It is about time these ‘critics’ understood the power of their words.

So to those who love to say “Everyone is a…”, I have a short message for you:

Dear Critics,

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, it is so easy to voice something without acknowledging the extent to which this could actually hurt or demotivate someone.

Do you understand the power of these words? I do not think you do. These words are some of the most discouraging words to someone, who aspires to start a YouTube Channel, Blog, Hair, Make-Up etc., could hear.

Do you know why? No. Well, let me tell you why. Starting your own YouTube channel, blog or business is incredibly daunting. For many of us, it is the first time we are putting ourselves out there and this can be very nerve racking. From the perspective of a blogger, I know, for a fact, that if I was surrounded by individuals who only told me that “Everyone is a blogger these days”, this blog probably would not exist. I know that you are encouraged to not care about what others think, but what happens to those who have not mastered that yet? A lot of people are vulnerable and influenced by these opinions and thoughts. I am sure some of you critics did not even take that into consideration. You need to realise that putting yourself out there is not easy, and unnecessary phrases only feed into people’s existent fears.

But the main question is, what is the problem if everyone is a blogger, YouTuber or make-up artist? It is reassuring to know you can see the growth in certain fields. You have great observational skills, but why do you make it seem like it is negative? Is it not encouraging to see so many productive young people? I am pleased to see numerous young people capitalising on their skills, but yet you continue to look down on this and I will honestly never understand why. Support people instead of putting them down.

Do you know what the funniest thing about all of this is? You guys, who love to make consistent comments, are doing nothing with your time. You prefer to be keyboard warriors or actively voice your negativity over amazing things. How does having a few more YouTubers or bloggers affect you? It is easy to scroll past a post you do not want to read or simply not watch the YouTube video. So, what is the real problem? Personally, I think you are bitter and wish you had something to do with your time, but because you do not your best option is to discourage others.

Let me tell you what you can do instead of criticising productive people:

  1. If you have nothing positive to say, keep your mouth closed.
  2. Give some encouragement and support
  3. If you think that there are many people in a particular field, why don’t you suggest ways to become more unique? Do not dwell on the problem, instead provide a reasonable solution.

Additionally, there are many benefits to starting a YouTube channel or even blogging. It is a massive confidence boost. Over the months, my confidence has grown because I have been able to share my thoughts without worrying about what others think. Also, I am learning how to articulate myself better, which will be beneficial in my personal and professional life. I have been able to inspire people with words, something you will not be able to do with your consistent negativity.

So before you say “Everyone is a YouTuber/Blogger/a Make-up artist”, think about your words wisely and ask yourself, is there really a problem with this and how does it affect me?

Yours sincerely,

Noelle Donkor

A quick message to anyone who wants to start a YouTube Channel, a Blog, doing Makeup, Hair and all the other things considered ‘common’. First things first, make sure you believe in whatever you want to do. You cannot avoid criticism forever, so be ready to handle it when it comes your way. Remember, you are not here to please anyone but yourself (and God!), so if makeup or hair is something that makes you happy, then do it. Work on your skill and showcase it to as many people as you want.
